Kiryas Joel Withdraws Lawsuit Against Village Of Woodbury

The Village of Kiryas Joel has withdrawn its six-year lawsuit against the Village of Woodbury in which it challenged Woodbury�s comprehensive plan.

The lawsuit had alleged that Woodbury�s comprehensive plan included �exclusionary� zoning.

Had the suit continued and Kiryas Joel was successful, it would have been �crippling to Woodbury�s quality of life,� said Assemblyman James Skoufis, who said the discontinuation of the legal action is �a major win for Woodbury residents.�

The village zoning �is now protected, the character of our community is maintained, and taxpayer dollars are saved from continued legal expenses,� the assemblyman said.

�Protecting Woodbury has and will always be my and the village board�s top priority,� said Mayor Michael Queenan, who credited Skoufis with helping to secure �this legal victory.�

�Woodbury is a beautiful, suburban community � and we need to keep it that way,� said Town Supervisor-elect Frank Palermo.

Skoufis also secured commitments to create a buffer between the towns of Palm Tree and Blooming Grove, establish a new route for the Long Path, and make any legislative acceleration of Palm Tree�s timetable contingent on special state aid for Monroe-Woodbury schools.

On election day, the Village of Kiryas Joel won approval of Monroe voters to create the Town of Palm Tree out of a small section of the current Town of Monroe and Kiryas Joel.
