A veteran New York Police Department officer has reached the highest rank for a black woman in department history.
Kim Royster was promoted to assistant chief at a ceremony on Monday.
As a deputy chief, Royster was commanding officer of the NYPD�s public information operation for the past five years. She�ll now be in charge of its recruitment division.
Assistant chief is the third-highest rank at the nation�s largest police department, behind bureau chief and chief of department.
Royster first became a police officer in 1987.
