DEVELOPING: El AL Flight To Newark to Arrive 2 Hours Before Shabbos; Misaskim Working With Customs, Port Authority

elalThe following is via TLS:

An El Al flight from Tel Aviv to Newark with Frum passengers from the tri-state area on board will be arriving just hours before Shabbos following a lengthy delay, prompting Misaskim to get involved.

The flight was reportedly initially cancelled, but was then back on track for departure though, approximately nine hours after the intended departure time.

With the plane expected to arrive in Newark at about 5 PM, Misaskim immediately sprung into action to ensue passengers make it home in time for Shabbos.

Misaskim founder Reb Yanky (Jack) Meyer tells TLS he has spoken to Custom and Port Authority officials to ensure a smooth and expedited process once the flight comes in.

Additionally, says Reb Yanky, Misaskim has arranged for El Al to have additional baggage handlers on hand to ensure passengers receive their baggage in an expedited manner.

NOTE: If anyone needs to be placed for Shabbos, Union County Chaverim has many places for people to stay just five minutes away from airport. Please contact their hotline 908-866-6166 if you need assistance.

I’m sure you know about Elizabeth. It’s really close by, and they have put Yidden up for Shabbos in similar circumstances before.

I can understand international flights (with customs and immigration) take a longer time than domestic flights. Living in Elizabeth (10 minutes away) I recall landing at Newark 90 minutes before candle lighting from a business trip in Tampa. It definitely possible, especially if there is someone home preparing for Shabbos, and someone to pick you up, but of course there is that stress element. For one thing, it’s definitely unique to shower and get fully dressed for Shabbos 1200 miles away!

    In re: justsmile613 post,

Passaic is NOT 10-15 minutes away from airport during rush hour. Plane is scheduled to touch down during height of Friday/weekend rush hour.

Heard from a friend in Hillside, NJ (an extension of the Elizabeth community) that the shul there sent out an email about the situation, and within 10 minutes, they had over 50 responses from community members volunteering to host people for Shabbos! Amazing!

Nine hours late in leaving I would not be on the flight. I never fly on Friday for that reason and try always to be where I going to be for SHabbos by Mincha Gedolah

They should be happy the flight landed safely. In these times, more important to follow safety and security procedures, even if the flight arrives a few minutes after licht benchen. Those that can stay near the airport will do so and the others may arrive home a few minutes late and its not the end of the world.
